Sharp pointy things make you giggle.
You gave me the 'heraldic no' expression.
How'd you decide on Microbiology as a profession?

They were wrong. I even got the most immunology-oriented project there. So I'm only interested in microorganisms in their interaction with the host.
That is, unless it's related to cooking...

Inspiration's been a little thin on the ground for me for a few years, at least in a professional sense. I do get lots of juice from people with Mad Skilz at whatever, who also have the nack of teaching and making what they do feel accessible to anyone. Though if you take a broader view, love has been the big mover and shaker in my life recently, and that ain't bad. And then there's bacon.

How did you get started as a herald?
Of your current ones?

Date: 2009-12-16 11:42 pm (UTC)I am a research geek. There's nothing I enjoy quite so much as plowing through books to find lost treasures. And one day I found this book on the history of British surnames . . . And then I decided to fix my own name to be period and accurate . . . And the rest was history.
If I had stuck with Gaelic, my name would have been Ailis inghean mhic an Toisich, but that was *never* going to get pronounced right, and Scots is so much simpler.
As for court heraldry, it was a case of one too many inaudible courts and the realization that after teaching people how to argue to real world courts, multiple years of singing and multiple years of theater, I could do better than some guy randomly dragged up there to be the herald when no one else would do it.

What thing in the SCA is your true passion?
no subject
Date: 2009-12-18 12:28 pm (UTC)I'd have to say that my passion is seeing how the puzzle pieces fit together. Much more so than any single discipline. It's the thrill of discovery. And sifting each little piece of information into the greater frame of reference.
If'n I get time, for example, I plan to make Sinterklaas speculaas cookies to give to my friends at 12th Night. And at some point, investigate why it is that the end product of my Great-grandmother's sugar cookies are so very similar to the "Finer Jumbles" from The English Housewife. RIght after I finish making my gown. ;-)
The one time I had cause to work with a professional psychologist who specialized in learning styles and and intelligence, he finally looked me up and down and told me I had "The Gift." It isn't purely intelligence as measured by an IQ score - though there's that element. It's more the ability to file away random bits of information and later drag them out and put them in the pattern. Synthesis, at an instinctive level.
This is why I prefer to continue to learn new things than to become the end-all-be-all expert on one extremely narrow subject. Once I learn something, I'm not that interested in repeating it - I'd rather move on to something new... look, a butterfly!!
I'll make multiple variations on a gown - but I'm unlikely to ever make precisely the same style twice.
