Fleur-de- not a lobster

Ok... so I have these arms.  Alys helped me with them. They are very nice arms...but they are boring.  Young SCAdian, probably should have listened to the wise herald when she said wait a little before doing a device. Did I listen... not so much.  But hey, I got a cool name out of the deal.

I know that if I go with a new devise I would need to release the ones I currently have. I really like my badges.  They truly reflect me and they are puny: swords skewering a crow, a pair of nom-nuts and a cannon with a spool of thread. I want to design something that is more, me. Something equally punny, and fun and that reflects my "personality".

Now if I was listening to the heralds correctly this weekend, pink is not a valid color, but red is.  I can't do fleur-de-bugs, but I could do fleur-de-lys (officially) and then get "creative" (unofficially).  And using "Fleur-de-lys (gold fleur-de-lys on blue fields) - The use of three, or a semy of, gold fleur-de-lys on anything blue is so strongly associated with the Royalty of France that their use in SCA arms is considered presumptuous." So... as long as Im not using gold or blue, then I should be ok.

I love the colors, red and black being my favorites and the shield with the stripe that goes sinister (?) diagonally(?).

Here is one idea we were throwing around earlier today. (yes the pot would be more medieval, it's just a concept)

Any other suggestions?

Good period aesthetics say that there should be a pot on both sides of the bend sinister (that's the correct name of the stripe). I like the bend sinister with the fleurs de lys.

If you want to do heraldry that is specifically Scots/northern English to match with the exact time and place of your name, let me know.

That idea is intriguing too. It would need to be more English, less Scottish as Cranlegh is 30 miles from London. I am looking for things that match my personality, fun, yet, still heraldicly correct.

I like the bend sinister with the fleurs de lys. That orientation was Bruni's idea.

Take a look at some of the period armorials for ideas too:

I'm primarily a names geek - Lillia and Bruni are stronger on armory than I am - but I can point you in research directions.

And while I was cranky for all of 5 seconds about my name choice. I think we did awesome! And I get a cool story out of the whole process as well.

Oooo... those are cool. It looks like the English were into things in threes.

I like it!!!! , but w/o the pot...:(

I'm *sniff* so proud :D

To be fair: I haven't done _any_ conflict checking on that idea yet.
I want to see first what type(s) of concept(s) you like (and avoid extra-work ;)

[identity profile] alysten.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you... design work up front, checking after the concepts. :D

I have some ideas that I want to work on based on the links that Alys just sent.

See!
Do I know how you function or what? :D

Cursory conflict check looks clear. "Sable, on a bend sinister argent..." turns up nothing with fleurs or pots, nothing listed with a bend sinister primary that a search for "pot" hits, no fleur-de-lys designs that seem to even vaguely conflict.

(Disclaimer: I am not officially a herald yet, I'm still learning and practicing.)

Yay!
New herald!
Seems like you're doing a good job already :)

Thanks. ^_^

so you say pot but all i see is the Image comics logo

I'll have to double check the rules, but I don't think I've ever seen anything that says you have to release your other devices or badges to get a new one.

[identity profile] aryll.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
Also, I should have another badge for you next time I see you, I noticed the one I made for you at RAV got wet and ran. Next version I think I'll give a layer of clear tape too to waterproof it a bit.

There's a maximum limit on the number of registered pieces of armory one can have. If Alesone is at the limit, she'll have to release one to register any more.

Also, one can only have one set of registered arms. Everything else is a badge.

[identity profile] aryll.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, good to know.

[identity profile] alysten.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 03:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I have 3 badges, and 1 device. I'm not at the limit, yet. But this would be a new device, so I would have to release the current one. Thank you so much for the links. It makes a bunch more sense now why we constructed my current device the way we did.

[identity profile] math5.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 05:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You could decide to make a badge of the current one rather than release it. You don't _have to_ release it :)

[identity profile] math5.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes you can :)
Isn't it cool?

I love heralds...
