I am not a milliner.  I really do not have the desire to become a milliner.

So LJ hive mind... where do I go to find/purchase proper German/Swiss head wear for a woman for the time period of 1500s, for a lower class/tross.  I am looking for something that is easy on easy off as this will be going with my armor, and is mainly worn to and from the list, and sometimes guard duty.

Right now I am wearing my hair pulled back or braided.

What sort of hat? The "dinner plate" variety with feathers?

I know you said you don't want to make it but... German Accessories
I've had little luck in finding German stuff to purchase which is why I have no clothes that match my persona!
It must be out there though somewhere....

Would that be the appropriate head wear?

The Tellerbarret is the "pizza hat" routinely seen with the Kampfrau look. Swiss I'm less sure about, but likely. Goes best with a cute little coif.

You want I should make you one?

I would gladly pay for one. :D

The Tellerbarret *is* routinely seen with the Trossfrau look - at reenactment events. It is actually pretty uncommon in the original images and *generally* seen on women who both I (and the original artists)labled as...um...rent-by-the-hour.... *wink*

Honestly, the period correct choice would be the Bundlein or Steuchlein (varieties of the ‘big mushroom hat’). Earlier the period, the bigger the bump – in the well-to-do classes. IIRC in the lower classes the bump seems more reasonably sized throughout the period; probably because those folks were actually *working* in them.

Don’t know if this would work on a fighter…

If you are interested, Marion is starting to make these and would probably be able to work with you on your specific SCA needs.

What would you recommend? As I am not rentable by the hour. ;-)

Yeah... the whole easy on easy off. I could just keep my hair braided I suppose.

Now there's an idea.

Love the icon BTW.

EDIT NOTE: I just updated my comment to say that Marion is making these now. As someone who has worked with SCA fighters before and as someone who is pretty expert in this particular field I would recommend talking to her. LJ name is "mmcnealy".

Cool! They are not listed in her Etsy store yet as she is just doing her first commission for a customer in Europe. However, she has done a LOT of work on these hats over the years (including a few A&S entries I believe) and I have bought items from her in the past - a Schlappe for my husband - so I can recommend her with a clear conscience.

I wasn't going to comment on your vocational interests. ;-) Though the pizza hat is handy in the sun.

I'll dig around - I thought I had some images from Basel somewhere.... Wherever I put them....
