alysten: (Fency)
After Yule, I started thinking about my fencing forms, where I want to go with my fencing in the new year, and how to best use what to learn from my new don. It all started with the honing steel as a rigid parry object.

So in keeping with the whole kitchen theme, we came up with apron (non-rigid), spoon/ladle (rigid), stock pot lid (rigid) and sheet pan (melee). I brought my kitchen apron (complete with Yule stains) and my large metal ladle to practice Wednesday. I fell in love all over again. It was hard to believe 2 hours just flew by.

The ladle functions like a dagger. The bowl makes a very effective set of quillions. The metal holds up to being whacked by blades and vice versa. If the tip gets caught in the bowl... I own it (though not very likely to happen, but when it did, it was sooooo cool).

The apron has enough weight to flow well and be effective. I just have to figure out what to do with the straps. They fling around like tentacles. Which could be all sorts of fun, but I was only successful in hitting myself in the head with them.

I love my dagger. Lots. It is my favorite weapon. So we talked about the potential of going out ladle and dagger. Which is when we stumbled upon 30 and ladle. I will have to play around with this a little more. Ian was suggesting it might actually be useful in melee, as I am not the person who will be running around killing everyone. I am more apt to be the person defending something stationary(ish). Though a handle and strap mounted to a full sheet pan would make a great kitchen themed kite shield. Not too heavy. Perfect for being a meat shield.

All of these things would fit with the German armor I fence in. Camp followers would be the people doing work in the camp and looting the bodies/killing the mostly dead.
