NY has introduced a bill that make it illegal for restaurants to use any salt in food preparation.

NO OWNER OR OPERATOR OF A RESTAURANT IN THIS STATE SHALL USE SALT IN ANY FORM IN THE PREPARATION OF ANY FOOD FOR CONSUMPTION BY CUSTOMERS OF SUCH RESTAURANT, INCLUDING FOOD PREPARED TO BE CONSUMED ON THE PREMISES OF SUCH RESTAURANT OR OFF OF SUCH PREMISES.
Full bill here.

I understand people who have high blood pressure seek to avoid extra salt in their diet.  But people on the opposite end of the BP scale, like me, who actually need salt? This potentially could be very dangerous. Chances are I wouldn't be able to bring salt into a restaurant. If this passes, it looks like I will put NY on my 'do not like' states. I am irate enough that formulating a complete coherent rant escapes me at the moment.

Not to mention that salt is not optional for seasoning. Hello? Mr. Senator? Do you cook? Evidently not.

None at all?

Talk about overreaction.

1. Salt is an essential chemical in baking -- dough won't rise properly without it.

2. Not enough salt in the diet is as bad as too much.

3. Most people only get iodine in their diets through iodised salt. Get rid of the salt and watch the rise of hypothyroidism and goitre.

The summary, at least, says the prohibition is on owner/operators. Consumers could presumably still douse their food with salt as desired, and owners could even provide salt for such--so long as they don't use in preparation it themselves.

It's still goofy.

Wow. If I lived in NY I am pretty sure that I could think of a few thousand things I would *prefer* my legislature to be working on...

Bakeries would be screwed. Salt is vital to many aspects baking.

And people with low blood pressure will have many many more issues than we already do. Its interesting that they forget that while yes, bad things can happen with excess, there are diseases that have been reduced.

The Asian food industry would be screwed. Most of their sauces are processed with salt.

What if it is a secret plot to help reduce the budget short falls. $1000 a pop for each violation. That could raise a lot of monies. But yes, there are many different things that they could be working on.

Bizarre!

Give me salt or give me... horrible dizzy spells and bland food. :(

Waste. Of. Time. And. Resources.

Get a clue, government.

An "interesting" new step in the series "let us legislate your own good for you".
I am also pro-choice regarding people's culinary choices :)

But... I love salt!

Hello, things bad for one person are not necessarily bad for another! Plus the chemistry aspect.

I could understand asking restaurants to make nutrition information available so people know what they are eating and can avoid food that would be bad for them, but why deprive everyone of something that is not itself harmful.

Perhaps this will distract them: http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/35778477/ns/today-today_food_and_wine/

I have no problem with breast milk cheese (assuming it doesn't become so wildly popular we end up with human lactation farms), but I'd rather see them try to stop human cheese from being served than salt.

Yeah... I saw that one yesterday. I am still unsure of it. It's not like it is "regulated".

Making ingredients known sure. Small restaurants putting out food labels not so much. The testing is very, very expensive. Most restaurants will tell you what's in the food. They have to due to the number of strange allergies that are out there today.

I'm just amused that the ad going with that article was "I can't believe it's not butter"

I, for one, am glad to know that NY has solved so many problems that passing ludicrous salt bills is finally at the top of the list. It must be a damn utopia up there.

So is anyone else getting a flash of the scene from Demolition Man, where Sandra Bullock is explaining to Sylvester Stallone why everything he loves has disappeared? Cigarettes, now salt, what's next? Steak?!?!
