If you are doing philosophy from period point of view, I recommend you start with Aristotle, as so many of the period philosophers did. You also can't go wrong with Thomas Aquinas, who had opinions on everything. Having gone to a Jesuit college, I had to do 4 years of philosophy -- there might as well be some use to it other than understanding that Monty Python song.
