My thoughts turn to waffles

I want to do some open fire cooking at war this year. I am looking at getting a waffle iron like this one. Question is, how exactly does it get used? I am gathering there is some sort of rest or such that is used in conjunction with the iron?

You can use a rest, most folks lean them on a rock. Preheat, test with a spot of water. Grease, pour in batter.
Hold over coals, turn. It's fiddly, not hard. I use a turning fork to peel the waffles out, they can stick.
